In 2008, the ABF commenced nationwide Little League charters in each state.

The Southern Mariners, one of the foundation teams, competes in the Victorian Little League Championships, comprised of players from teams from the south eastern suburban clubs of Melbourne.

The winner of the State Championships progresses to the Australian Little League Nationals tournament, the winner of which goes on to compete as 'Australia' at the prestigious Little League World Championships held in Williamsport, Pennsylvania in the US; a very high profile event telecast live by ESPN.

This page is dedicated to the Mariners.

The team started in 2008 as 'South East' becoming the 'South East Mariners' in 2010 and then the 'Southern Mariners' in 2012.

In 2013, the Mariners won the Victorian championships. They then went on to represent Victoria at the Australian National Championships held on the Gold Coast and did extremely well.

Famous Mariners 'Graduate'

Brando3NY.jpg - smallIn 2014, Mariners 'alumnus' Brandon Stenhouse (pictured left) signed with the world famous New York Yankees, becoming the first Mariner to sign a professional contract.

Brandon was one of the members of that inaugural team lineup. (See pictures below of the 08 and 09 teams that Brandon was in.)

Mariners coach John Carlile provides some details re Brandon’s involvement with the Mariners.

“Brandon was selected as a bottom age player in the inaugural year of the Victorian Little League Championships (2008).  At the conclusion of the tournament Brandon was selected in the Tournament All-Star team (despite his parents letting him have a sleepover on the 2nd night of the tournament and twisting his angle jumping off a trampoline!).  He played mostly infield and did some pitching.  For a bottom age player Brandon did an amazing job.”

“The next year Brandon returned a much stronger player and was a leader within the team.  He displayed all the attributes of a player that wanted to continue to improve and worked well within the team environment. His performance over the tournament was a step up from the previous year and it is obvious that the continued improvement has carried on each year since.”

“From all the past and present Southern Mariners, players, coaches, officials, parents and supporters we wish Brandon all the best for the future.”

A great story for his family, the Cheltenham Baseball Club, the Mariners and for the Little League program.
